Long Story Short
A study from the Kinsey Institute for research in Sex, Reproduction and Gender has revealed how often people of different age groups have sex and found that 18-29 year-olds have double the amount of sex as people in their 40s.
It’s a near-inevitable fact of life that as we get older we have less sex.
In our late-teens and early-20s, couples can hardly keep their hands off each other, but as middle age starts to kick in sex has to be pencilled in to the planner weeks in advance. Usually with a question mark next to it.
While pretty much everyone wishes they could have a little more sex, there’s not been an easy way to find out how your sex life stacks up against other people your age, until now.
The Kinsey Institute for research in Sex, Reproduction and Gender at Indiana University has had the guts to ask the question we all want answered and has revealed what the normal amount of sex is for each age group, as reported by The Sun.
Unsurprisingly, people between 18 and 29 are having the most sex (despite evidence to the contrary), an average of 112 steamy sex sessions per year, which equates to twice per week.
That might not sound too impressive, but it’s a solid ratio and beats 30-39 year-olds who can only manage to get down to business 86 times per year, or 1.6 times per week.
However, the real passion killer seems to be turning 40. The results found that couples between 40 and 49 could only manage to have sex 69 times per year [Ed note: Nice.] which isn’t that far off half the total for 18-29s. No great mystery there though – kids plus work stress plus a mortgage doesn’t tend to be a recipe for romance.
The Institute didn’t probe into the sex lives of anyone older than 49, which is probably not a bad thing.
It was also revealed that 34% of married couples have sex two to three times per week, 45% manage a few times per month and a poor 13% only have sex a few times per year.
Let’s face it we’re all competitive, especially when it comes to sex, so if nothing else these figures give a good target to aim for. And there’s nothing sexier than having a target to aim for….

What’s driving the differences in frequency between age groups?
Drop This Fact
A study from Your Tango suggested that the public see once a month as the minimum frequency of sex a couple should be having, once a week was regarded as average and three to five times per week was rated ideal.
